God’s Word to You is John 19:28-30
28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When He had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
Today is what is referred to as Good Friday. It wasn’t good to Jesus. Notice I said “to” Jesus. For Him it was a day of physical as well as mental and spiritual torture. It was the day He faced physical torture, which He knew about beforehand, faced being beaten and crucified unto death, which He knew about beforehand, and He knew and felt all the sins of the world. Did you read that? ALL the sins of the world. The ones from the past, present and future, and He knew this beforehand.
And He went to that Friday anyway. Why? Of course because He loves us. But also because for us to be redeemed, for us to be set free of the burden of sin, for us to be restored to a right relationship with God, He had to.
And when He, on the cross, took His last breath and said “It is finished”, it was. For all eternity sin was finished. No not sin being in the world, but sin owning our souls and eternity.
Sunday will come but only after Good Friday and only after that Saturday when people had to be confused. His disciples had to be fearful and full of doubt, even though He had told them what would happen. And Satan had to be wondering if he had finally won.
And many today are still confused. They don’t understand the power of the cross. They don’t know what to believe about sin and Jesus. Many say they trust in Him and His sacrifice but yet they still hold on to their works and pride.
Many still live in that Saturday of confusion. They hear and they believe a little and they have that “understanding” with God that allows them to do what they think is right and they hope they go to Heaven.
But here is the truth. It is finished. If you have believed in Jesus, that He was born of a virgin, died on the cross and rose again, that He will keep His promise to return and take us home, if you have told Him You are my Lord, then it was finished for you over two thousand years ago.
That is why it is Good Friday. It is finished and we have the choice who we will serve.
